Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne
17, rue de la Sorbonne
75005 Paris
France
The Sorbonne was created in the XIII century; its buildings age from the XVIIth, XVIIIth and XIXth centuries. It nowadays hosts four universities including the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne which, with more than 40.000 students and 30 buildings is one of the largest universities in France.
Several meetings, exhibitions, concerts, forums, conferences, and symposia are organised each year at the Sorbonne.
Its amphitheatres are decorated with crafted wood furniture, paintings and statues, like the Amphitheatre Richelieu in which lectures are given daily or the even more impressive Grand Amphitheatre with its 1200 places.
The Sorbonne is placed at the heart of the Quartier Latin, traditional students' area of Paris. It is dominated by the Pantheon, and surrounded by cafés with terraces, restaurants, and libraries. Five minutes walk from the Seine river and the Ile de la Cité, and two minutes walk from the Luxembourg gardens, the Sorbonne area is in the centre of Paris.
Paris is well known for its monuments, museums, and picturesque places. All major Parisian attractions such as the Eiffel Tour, the Louvres, the Sacré Cœur, the Arc de Triomphe, or the Cathedral of Notre-Dame can be reached from the Sorbonne by metro and bus in less than half an hour.
Paris is served by two international airports: Roissy - Charles De Gaulle, located north of the capital and Orly located south. Daily flights are available from and to all major cities in the world. There are train and bus services from both airports to the centre of the city. The Sorbonne can be reached from each airport in less than one hour.
In so far as "local" transportation is concerned, there are five railway stations in Paris making London reachable by fast trains in 3 hours and Brussels in 1h20. There are metro lines from all railway stations to the centre of Paris. The Sorbonne is nearby five bus lines, two metro lines, and two underground regional train lines (RER).
